If you live or come to Australia during the first months of spring, beware. It is Magpie breeding season and they are notoriously prone to swooping on unsuspecting humans who are in their territory.
Our house is in their territory. A family of about eight come into my backyard each day. They sing and I throw them a crust of bread of whatever I have lying around. In return they don’t swoop my children or my dog in the backyard.
Hazel, our three-year-old chocolate labrador, is having the absolute time of her life, chasing the birds. Though her stealth always fails her.
I had my first rejection letter today. It was polite and generic. No, thank you. We wish you all the best. It’s a tough business, my writer friends tell me, and I can assure you, I felt it today.
Writing a book is like having a child. You form an attachment. To the characters. And although I’m working on a sequel, today’s rejection, along with a flu, has robbed me of the ability to find words.
I just feel incredibly tired. But we shall not wallow.

You know what? I say that I love it and I say that I hate in equal measure. Kit Harrington’s posh accent is helping me write my new romantic lead. But the golden shower scene? It’s a no from me.
